RYA Start Sailing (Level 1)

Course Details

The RYA Start Sailing (Level 1) course covers the basic knowledge and practical skills for adults aged 18+ to get onto the water. This course is perfect for adults who have expressed an interest in sailing, want to try a new sport or enjoyed themselves on a Discover Sailing Session.

Our qualified RYA Instructors work to the RYA National Sailing Scheme, so you can be sure you are receiving a nationally recognised and accredited qualification.

Course Duration

2 Days (9am – 5pm total of 16 hours)

Theory Knowledge Covered

Wind awareness/ direction
Sail and Foil Controls
Parts of the boat
Stopping, Controlling Speed and getting out of irons
Parts of the boat and sail – how do they work?
Knots (Figure of 8, Round turn and two half hitches and cleating)
Local Hazards
Preparing for a tow
Clothing and Equipment
Meteorology including Beaufort Scale and when to reef

Student to Instructor Ratio

Maximum 9:1
With current COVID Guidelines and restrictions indoors this is currently limited to 6:1
