With the days lengthening and getting warmer, it is time to start thinking about the new season of sailing at Aylesbury Sailing Club. Quite a few members have continued to sail the Winter Series throughout the winter, but Sunday 29th March sees the start of the Spring Series.
We have made a few changes to the programme for 2026. Due to popular demand we will return to a standard race time of 45 minutes, and generally hold three races on each Sunday. For those who need to get home by lunchtime we will start the first race at 10:30 (wind permitting) and the second at 11:45. A third race (which will see a return of class racing) will follow at 13:15 from late April to October. We hope come of those who sail in the Youth Group will come along a little early and take part in that race (but of course all are welcome to come to the earlier races too).
After the success of last years specific class championship days, we will again have four specific class championships held on Saturdays in July, September and October.
Have a look at the Club Calendar to see what is going on and when. With a total of 182 races taking place at the Club during the year there should be something for everyone to enjoy.
This year we have a new electronic race registration and results system which we ask you to use. The link is here, and it will also show you who else has entered. We will also be using a 10 minute warning and then a World Sailing standard 5,4,1,0 starting sequence (if it works at the Americas Cup and the Olympics it should work at Weston Turville). Full details can be found in the Notice of Race and the Guide for Race Officers and Competitors which have been updated for the season.
There will be a few race skills days over the course of the year where some of the club’s more experienced sailors will share tips and techniques, with an opportunity to practice specific skills like race starts and mark roundings on the water. Look out for the dates of these in due course.
But it is not all about the racing. We are lucky to have a well equipped clubhouse located in a secluded and beautiful setting on Weston Turville Reservoir. When the sun shines there are few lovelier places to be. There will be some social events during the year (including the Open Day and BBQ on Monday 4 May) and we hope to see many members and their families visiting the club for a picnic and a casual sail whenever the fancy takes them.
Here’s to a great year of sailing!
